Celebrations rocked Eldoret town and Deputy President William Ruto's home village of Sugoi after he was declared the President-elect by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission.

The celebrations brought the region to a standstill as thousands of his supporters thronged the streets of Eldoret, chanting songs and slogans to celebrate Ruto's win.

The residents had waited all day watching proceedings at Bomas of Kenya on giant TV screens along Uganda Road in Eldoret.

The road had been closed all day as many residents waited for the presidential results to be announced.

"This is one of the best days of my life because as it has been said I feel freedom has arrived,"Jane Kiptoo, a resident, said.

Many residents of Sugoi were seen dashing to the home of the President-elect, which is located about 30km from Eldoret, off the highway to Webuye. Security was quickly enhanced at the home, where workers and visitors joined in the celebrations.

Residents said they were over joyed that their son had been elected president despite the many challenges he had gone through in politics.

"He has struggled from an ordinary person, and we thank God that finally he has made it to the top," Paul Kipyego, another resident, said.

Most residents of Eldoret said they would celebrate for several days and thank God for the victory.

In Eldoret town, the residents waved twigs and UDA campaign colours to cap the celebrations.

Similar celebrations also rocked major towns in the region including Kapsabet, Iten, Kapsowar and Kabarnet, among others.

Some of the residents, however, condemned the chaos witnessed in Bomas during announcement of the results.
