Independents swim against tide to upset big wigs

Big political parties have been struck by major upsets from independent candidates who, despite going against the waves, managed to pull surprise wins.

The political parties had hoped that they would sweep seats in their strongholds to stamp their dominance in Tuesday's general election.

However, results streaming in have confirmed that some independent candidates became a hard nut to crack for the big political parties.

Independent candidate Fatuma Mohamed has won the Migori woman representative seat, weathering strong opposition from the ODM candidate.

Mohamed garnered 154,538 votes against ODM's Ghati Denittah, who got 117,591 votes.

Mohammed lost the ODM primaries to Denittah and opted to run as an independent candidate.

In Nairobi, Sports Kenya CEO Ronald Karauri won the Kasarani parliamentary seat, beating incumbent Mercy Gakuya of Jubilee party.

Karauri also beat former MP John Njoroge who was flying Deputy President William Ruto's UDA ticket.

In Kisumu East Shabbir Shakir was reelected as an independent candidate.

Shabbir garnered 35,704 votes against his rival Nicholas Oricho of ODM, who obtained 28,491 votes.

In Machakos county where Kalonzo Musyoka's Wiper party enjoys dominance, Joshua Mwaiyo emerged the winner.

However, the highlight of the sweep by independents was the victory of Kawira Mwangaza who beat Kiraitu Murungi to win the Meru governor's seat.

Mwangaza, who vied on an independent ticket floored Kiraitu and Senator Mithika Linturi, effectively sending them home after dominating local politics for years.

Meru county was seen as Ruto's stronghold despite frays from Azimio La Umoja, on whose platform Kiraitu was running for reelection.

In the same county, Rahim Dawood was reelected as an independent candidate in Imenti North constituency. He weathered a strong UDA wave.

In Western Kenya Goeffrey Mulanywa went against the strong ODM and ANC wave to capture the Nambale parliamentary seat.
