Scores feared dead in grisly road accident on Mombasa road

The accident happened near Maanzoni Lodge in Athi River.

Several people died in a grisly accident Monday evening involving two matatus near Maanzoni Lodge on Mombasa road.

Among the dead is an assistant county commissioner in Machakos county.

Athi River South subcounty police commander Mary Njoki confirmed the incident saying police officers were at the scene of accident.

"Yes, it's true the accident happened near Maanzoni, my officers are attending to the scene, " Njoki told the Star on phone.

Machakos deputy county commissioner David Rotich said the administrator's body had been moved to Montenzuma Funeral home in Machakos while the injured were rushed to Machakos Level 5 Hospital.

The number of fatalities had not been established by press time following the 6 pm accident that involved 14-seater matatus.

One of the matatus belonging to Makos Sacco was headed to Nairobi at the time of collision. 

The cause of the accident was yet to be established.

The wreckage was towed to Athi police station.
