High cost of living Jubilee's biggest failure - Tifa

This is heavily attributed to the high cost of living being experienced in the country.

In Summary

• The rise in Kenya’s inflation was mainly due to an increase in prices of commodities, including food and non-alcoholic beverages, furnishings, household equipment and routine household maintenance.

• According to TIFA the poll had +/- 2.34 margin of error.

The high cost of living has been cited by majority of Kenyans as the Jubilee regime's biggest failure,  a Tifa survey shows.

The poll released on Monday shows that supporters of the Azimio la Umoja presidential candidate Raila Odinga and Kenya Kwanza's  William Ruto agree largely on the impact of the cost of living and national debt.

The majority of those who hold this opinion are Raila's supporters (49%) followed by Ruto's supporters at 47 per cent.

"More of Odinga support cite employment, corruption, and education. For their part, Ruto supporters more often mention issues related to economic growth, agriculture and peace/security," the survey said.

Further, twice as many of them cite divisions within government – an obvious reflection of the strains between the president and his deputy during this period, the report said.

Other top three failures according to the poll included education with Odinga's supporters at (19%) and 15 per cent of Ruto's supporter holding this view.

A poor Gross Domestic Product (GDP) was cited by 17 per cent of Ruto's supporters as Jubilee's other failure while 22 per cent of Ruto supporters held a similar view.

On corruption, 14 per cent of Raila's supporters said Jubilee had failed to end the vice compared to 11 per cent of Ruto's supporters who held similar view.

"Other failures were security at 4 per cent of Raila's supporters and Ruto 6 per cent, leadership wrangles with Odinga at 2 per cent and Ruto 4 per cent, democracy with Raila at one per cent and Ruto two per cent and Covid-19 response both aspirant supporters at zero per cent," TIFA said.

The poll also cited employment (Raila supporters 14%), Ruto supporters (9%) while supporters of both candidates cited health at 8 per cent with 5 per cent of Raila's supporters holding this view compared to Ruto's 6 per cent.

On Agriculture, 4 per cent of Raila's supporters said Jubilee had failed in this sector compared to 6 per cent of Ruto's supporters.

The poll had a +/- 2.34 margin of error  and it was conducted between June 25 and 30, 2022.

Some 1,533 Kenyans were interviewed in Central Rift, Coast, Lower Eastern, Mt Kenya, Nairobi, Northern, Nyanza, South Rift and  Western.

The percentage of those who were not sure stands at 22 per cent.
