Kenya Handball Federation (KHF) are working out modalities to have a leaner league comprising only the top teams, a top official revealed.

Charles Omondi, the KHF technical director, said a move to decongest the one-tier 25-team league for the men is in the pipeline.

He said they also hope to introduce a lower tier. He said plans are underway to have a 12-team league for the country’s top tier and another lower tier of about 16 teams.

‘This move is long overdue,” said Omondi, adding: “We will have an executive meeting after the Super Cup, where we will unveil the way forward.”

Omondi said the biggest impediment has been the lack of funds as well as having enough technical officials to manage the games

The KHF,  he noted,  is disadvantaged because the branch that would have organised activities for the weaker teams remains inactive.

“If we had an active branch, we would easily have some teams start from there. As you can see, everybody is playing in the top tier.”

Some teams have raised concerns that there is a need to move away from a one-legged league to one with return-leg fixtures.

The women’s category has 12 teams playing home and away matches.

Ulinzi are currently top with 39 points from 20 games while General Service Unit (GSU) are second with 38 points from 21 games.

Reigning champions National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB) are lying third on 36 points.
