Curfew bearing fruits in Marakwet as locals surrender arms

The security team urged residents to voluntarily surrender all the illegal firearms.

The dusk-to-dawn curfew in Elgeyo Marakwet county has began yielded fruits aided by a multi-agency security operation.

Residents have surrendered 21 assault rifles and 13 rounds of ammunition of diverse caliber since the curfew was imposed in parts of the county on June 7, 2022. 

The curfew effectively locked up five of the twenty wards in Elgeyo Marakwet as government renewed efforts to tackle banditry in Kerio Valley.

A security operation ordered alongside the curfew has since resulted in the arrest of 107 people and the recovery of seven cows, 18 goats and 36 arrows. 

Thirteen vehicles and 14 motorcycles have also been impounded.

Rift Valley Regional Commissioner, Maalim Mohamed, accompanied by GSU Commandant Douglas Kanja, led a delegation of senior security officers from National Police Service and National Government Administration Officers to assess progress.

The team lauded the security officers and appreciated the residents for their continuous support and collaboration.

Earlier, two AK 47 rifles had been surrendered to authorities.

Chief Lorem of Koibirir Location in Marakwet East subcounty handed over the two assault rifles to the General Service Unit Camp at Tot.

The first rifle was received from a resident of Kisiwel sub-location, while the second rifle was surrendered by a resident of Kowow sub-location.

The handing-over exercise was presided over by the County Commissioner accompanied by the Deputy County Commissioner and the Operations Commander.

The Multi-Agency security team in Elgeyo Marakwet urged members of the public to take advantage of the ongoing disarmament exercise to voluntarily surrender all the illegal firearms in their possession.
