Police in Dagoretti on Tuesday arrested a driver and his conductor who were allegedly transporting illicit brews in a hearse.

Dagoretti police commander Frank Wahome said the hearse was travelling to Nairobi from Western Kenya when it was intercepted in Uthiru, Nairobi.

"Earlier, we nabbed an ambulance with the siren on carrying chang’aa (Illicit brew),” Wahome said.

Police said they were alerted by the public.

The suspects were reportedly ferrying 130 litres of illicit brew in a coffin.

The chang'aa was packed in polythene bags and stuffed between dried maize so that it doesn't smell.

Wahome has said they will intensify inspection in vehicles, especially ambulances, hearses and state-owned vehicles to ensure there they are not used in illegal deals.

“This is an eye-opener that even these vehicles which are supposed to be given the right of way, sometimes they are used in illegal deals," Wahome said.

The suspects have been arrested at Uthiru after being tracked by police for over 200 kilometres

The commandant has urged the police to ensure that they identify vehicles that are ferrying illegal commodities.
