Speaker Muturi confers insignia honours to MPs, Assembly staff

Muturi congratulated the recipients and encouraged them to accelerate the good deeds.

The Speaker of the National Assembly Justin Muturi this morning presented insignia to respective recipients nominated by the Parliamentary Honours Advisory Committee for conferment of various national honours and awards.

The fourteen nominees who were recommended by the Committee were among several Kenyans decorated by President Uhuru Kenyatta vide Gazette Notice 13598 on 11th December, last year.

Speaking during the event, Muturi congratulated the recipients and encouraged them to accelerate the good deeds that earned them that recognition.

“I wish to urge you to keep on with the impeccable deeds that earned you the various state honours but also implore upon you to live up to the high moral calling expected of holders of national honours and awards,” urged the Speaker.

The 14 are; Peter Mungai Mwathi, MP, for Limuru Constituency, Silas Kipkoech Tiren, MP, Member for Moiben Constituency, Ezekiel Ombaki Machogu, MP, Member for Nyaribari Masaba Constituency, Clement Muturi Kigano, MP, Member for Kangema Constituency, Swarup Ranjan Mishra, MP, Member for Kesses Constituency, Athana Wafula Wamunyinyi, MP, Member for Kanduyi Constituency,  Mishi Khamisi Juma Mboko, MP, Member for Likoni Constituency, Ben George Orori Momanyi, MP, Member for Borabu Constituency, Sen. Paul Kimani Wamatangi, MP, Senator for Kiambu County.

Others are Sen. Beatrice Kwamboka Makori, MP, Nominated Senator; Sen. Fred Outa, MP, Senator for Kisumu County, and the Hon. Wambugu Martin Deric Ngujiri, Member for Nyeri Town.

Hon. Olago Aluoch, the outgoing Clerk of the National Assembly Mr Michael Sialai and Dr Margaret Nyag’ate Nyakang’o, the Controller of Budget were awarded the Chief of the Order of the Burning Spear (CBS).

Mr Jeremiah Walusala Ndombi, Deputy Clerk, National Assembly, Ms Serah Mbuli Kioko, Deputy Clerk, National Assembly, and Mr Mohamed Ali, were awarded the Moran of the Order of the Burning Spear (MBS).

Decoration of Kenyans with impeccable achievements with national honours and awards is guided by Article 132(4) of the Constitution which empowers the President to “confer honours in the name of People and the Republic.”

Further, Parliament enacted the Parliamentary Honours Act, 2013 which in turn established three Advisory Committees to assist the President in identifying nominees in accordance with the Act.

Among these advisory Committees is the Parliamentary Honours Advisory Committee chaired by the two Speakers of Parliament.

Other Members of the Parliamentary Honours Committee present during today's event were the Vice-Chair of the Parliament Service Commission,  (Dr Naomi Shaban), Senate Minority Leader, Sen. James Orengo and two Clerks of the Houses of Parliament were represented by the Deputy Clerks.
