Jeriel Ndeda Obura, the top student in the just-released 2021 KCSE results, has said that he did not expect to be the top student although he anticipated scoring Grade A.

Ndeda scored  Grade A of 87. 167 points in the 2021 KCSE exam. Education CS George Magoha announced the results on Saturday at Mitihani House.

"I did not think I was going to be at the top of the class. I told my friends I'll just get Grade A of 84 points," he said.

In an interview with Citizen TV, Ndeda said he wants to join Maseno university to pursue a medicine course.

"I love working with living things and Biology," he said when he was asked why he chose the course.

He believes that he will make discoveries in the field.

He lauded his friends and teachers for motivating and believing in him despite the stiff competition at Mang'u High school.

A total of 826,807 candidates sat the exam in 10,413 centres.

Magoha, while announcing the results, said the number of candidates with minimum university entry qualification of Grade C+ and above rose to 145,145 (17.49%) in the year 2021 KCSE Examination compared to 143,140 (19.03%) in 2020. 

"The percentage of candidates with a mean Grade of C+ and above has declined from 19.03 to 17.49," he said.
