Seven people were on Wednesday arraigned before a Nyeri Court for conducting female genital mutilation on minors within Nginga village, Muthuthuni Sub-Location in Nyeri County.

Christine Nthenya, Alice Wandia, Cecilia Nyaguthii, Rose Mumbi, Esther Ng'endo, Aloise Waweru and Wahome Muriuki were arrested by Mukurweini Police after being linked to the illegal act.

According to the National Police Service, a joint operation that involved county and national government officers was conducted on March 4 resulting in the arrest of the suspects.

Seven girls were rescued and are currently receiving medical attention.

The suspects are detained pending a ruling on their bail application on March 7.

"FGM is not only outdated but also outlawed hence criminal. The practice puts women, especially young girls under grave physical and psychological health risk," NPS said.

"It should therefore be condemned by all."

NPS also hailed a brave defiant five-year-old girl who stood up against the tormentors when they were about to administer the crude act on her.

She was spared from undergoing the ordeal by the time police intervened.

NPS urged the public to fully cooperate with the police by reporting all incidences related to FGM or SGBV.
