A nineteen-year-old woman died following a tragic road accident along Nairobi-Kangundo road at Malaa in Matungulu, Machakos.

Esther Kavinya succumbed while undergoing treatment at Kangundo Level 4 Hospital.

The lady had been a pillion passenger when the rider collided with an oncoming vehicle as they joined a junction on Sunday evening.

Kavinya’s brother, Paul Kenyatta told the Star that his sister succumbed to excessive bleeding after she fractured her legs.

Matungulu subcounty police commander Monica Kimani said the accident occurred at about 9.30pm.

She said the accident involving a motorcyclist and a motorist was reported at KBC police station.

"The rider was identified as Dennis Sagini Makori, 24. He was carrying two pillion passengers and heading towards Kangundo,” Kimani told the Star on phone on Monday.

The police boss said the rider turned to the right side, facing Kangundo, joining a junction without waiting for the road to be clear.

“Consequently, he collided with the said vehicle that was being driven by one Nice Ennocent Kimemia, 38, who was coming from the opposite direction,” she said.

Kimani said the driver sustained  chest injury while the rider sustained head injuries.

The two pillion passengers namely Ezron Ongato, 23, and Esther Kavinya, 19, both fractured their left legs.

All the victims were taken to Nguluni Level 3 Hospital for first aid while wreckages were towed to KBC police station.

Kavinya was later transferred to Kangundo Level 4 Hospital while Makori and Ongato were moved to Machakos Level 5 Hospital in critical condition.

Kimani said all road users including motorists, boda boda riders and pedestrians should be cautious while on road.

She said traffic rules and regulations should be adhered, to prevent unnecessary deaths.

The incident happened barely a day after a man died in tragic road accident along Thika – Garissa highway on Friday.

Yatta subcounty police commander Njoki Gachie said the accident involving a saloon car and a 14 seater matatu occurred at Makutano Yandalani in Yatta.

Gachie said the unidentified car driver died on the spot while six occupants of the PSV were admitted at Matuu Level 4 Hospital with serious injuries.

The six, she said, included the matatu driver. The wreckages were towed to Matuu police station.

The police boss said they had launched investigations into the accident.
