Learners in the Competency-Based Curriculum will soon be using a new and more advanced scientific calculator aligned with CBC.

If you don't want your child to be afraid of maths, this calculator will help.

It's the CASIO fx-82EX calculator or ClassWiz. It is an upgraded version of the fx-82MS model that is popular among secondary school students.

The first to use the newly upgraded scientific calculator will be university students pursuing science courses and secondary school learners.

Junior secondary learners in CBC will start using the calculators next year.

The Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development has approved the calculator.

KICD chief executive officer Charles Ong’ondo said the new calculator is aligned with the needs of the CBC and has more features and functions than earlier models.

KICD has partnered with Casio Middle East to provide free educational resources and ways to solve mathematics using a scientific calculator.

CBC involves using knowledge acquired in school to solve real-life problems.

“The CASIO Scientific Calculators (fx-82EX) are user friendly and can help learners to a great extent, especially at the tertiary level of education,” Ongondo said.

With this device, Ongondo said, will contribute a lot in facilitating teachers and learners of STEM subjects, science, technology, engineering and maths.

CASIO Middle East managing director Takashi Seimiya said maths and science are made easier by the infusion of technology.

Seimiya said the calculator will help reduce the perception that maths is a difficult subject, by reducing obstacles to comprehension.

“CASIO believes in the importance of learning mathematics. It is the base for all subjects because it plays a crucial role in understanding them, making it important to understand,” he said.

He committed to ensuring support for teachers and students in achieving better results in STEM subjects.

Materials were developed to include a digital emulator that demonstrates how the calculator can be used to solve mathematical problems.

Fractions, powers, algorithms, mathematical formula, among other topics, can be handled with ease, CASIO said.

The emulator integrates technology into the classroom and promotes interactive learning.

The resources consist of tutorials showing simplified and interactive operations of the scientific calculator.

The materials are accessible on the KICD website on the open educational resources section under introduction to CASIOfx-82EX calculator.

It displays input and results as seen in textbooks to make operation easier.
