Teachers Service Commission has announced it will train about 60,000 more teachers in the April holidays for the competency-based curriculum.
The trained teachers will be deployed in the junior secondary schools in the country.
TSC chief executive officer Nancy Macharia on Tuesday said the shortage of teachers especially in North-Eastern is caused by frequent attacks by the terrorists making teachers flee from the areas.
Macharia noted that other than the attacks by the terrorists, the shortage of teachers in the country has been occasioned by underfunding from the government.
In a statement on Tuesday, Macharia said so far, 229, 000 have already been trained in the country.
Further, she noted that she was working with the local leaders as well as the locals in the North Eastern to address the shortage of teachers in the region.
She also noted that the Commission was recruiting teachers in the North Eastern annually not like other regions where recruitment is done after every financial year.
"If you have a teacher right now, take him or her to the county director, we are not closing," Macharia said.
She urged teachers who had retired at 60 years and have not reached 65 years to apply for the positions in the North-Eastern region.
She urged the government to deploy 40, 000 more teachers and also offer an allocation for interns and teachers on a permanent basis to be deployed.
Earlier this month, Macharia said schools needed 100,000 teachers.
Macharia said TSC is working towards ensuring that the 100,000 deficit will be addressed for efficiency in the ministry of Education and to ensure that Competency-based Curriculum (CBC) is effective.
“The government gives us money to hire about 5,000 teachers a year. When we advertise for vacancies we get overwhelming applications but our hands are tied,” Macharia said.
The TSC boss said the commission is engaging interns as a stop-gap measure to bridge the gap.
She said the commission shares the positions equitably.
