The battle to succeed Kiambu Senator Kimani Wamatangi has intensified with George Maara, a three-time MP contestant, being the latest entrant.

The politician is seeking the Jubilee ticket to run for the seat which has attracted at least seven other aspirants.

Wamatangi, who has been senator since 2013, is seeking to vie for governor on Deputy President William Ruto’s UDA  party.

On Wednesday, Maara told the Star he is confident of defeating his rivals in the August polls to become the second Kiambu senator.

The aspirant said, although he initially thought of quitting politics, he changed his mind and decided to throw his heart into the ring.

“I have been summoned by my conscience to represent the people of Kiambu in Parliament as their senator,” Maara said.

On Monday the senatorial aspirant launched his bid at a high-profile event held at a hotel along Kiambu Road. The ceremony was attended by Kiambu Town MP Jude Njomo.

“I want to go and fight for more [budgetary] allocations and I plead with you to nominate me as the Jubilee Party flag-bearer during the nominations,’’ he said.

Maara has thrice tried to capture the Limuru MP seat.

The politician will battle with high-profile politicians eyeing the seat, including Governor James Nyoro’s director of delivery John Mugwe.

Beth Wangui, who initially vied for the position on a TNA ticket in 2013 but lost to Wamatangi, is also in the race and so is Kiambu county assembly speaker Stephen Ndicho.

Ndicho dropped his gubernatorial bid and opted to run for the senatorial seat.

Former Ngewa MCA Karungo wa Thang'wa will fight it out with Ndicho for the UDA ticket.

Also in the race is former Kiambu assembly speaker and Tujibebe Party secretary general Irungu Gathii, Machael Waikenda and former Sigona MCA Mutonya Njenga.

Njenga will be vying on Moses Kuria’s Chama Cha Kazi party.
