Mathira Member of Parliament Rigathi Gachagua has shared details of discussions held by President Uhuru Kenyatta with Mt Kenya elders at State House, Nairobi, on March 26.

Speaking in an interview on KTN News on Tuesday 29, Gachagua stated that some elders confided in him and other Deputy President William Ruto allies on what they discussed after they met Uhuru.

According to him, the elders reportedly described Uhuru as a desperate President who was working hard on ensuring his succession plans fall into place.

"The elders told us the President was desperate and they were asked to help him dismantle the influence of the DP. One selling point from the meeting was telling them that Ruto wanted to impeach him to get sympathy," Gachagua said.

"The people who the orders were intended for have different ideas of what should have been discussed. He should have explained to them why the economy handed to him by President Mwai Kibaki was declining," he added.

However, he stated that Uhuru's plan would backfire as they were determined to support the candidature of Ruto.

Gachagua argued that the impeachment claims were doctored to taint Ruto's reputation.

He further claimed that the elders were being misused and that the open-minded ones expressed their reservations over Uhuru's request.

"Most of the elders are our friends and they were shocked at the level of the President's desperation. In their own words, they stated that he has bitten more than he can chew. The whole session was a cry to help him penetrate the Mt Kenya region," he said.

During the March 26 meeting with about 3,000 elders from the Mt Kenya region, President Uhuru narrated how his deputy planned to impeach him.

He said their fallout was because he found out Ruto’s plan to topple him before his term ended.

The leaders were from Kiama Kia Ma, Kikuyu Council of Elders and elected leaders.

The president further told them that a Ruto presidency was not good for the country.

He further told the elders that when he formed the government, Ruto attempted to strike a power deal with ODM Party leader Raila Odinga.
