At least three passengers were injured when gunmen sprayed bullets at two public service vehicles on the Lodwar-Kitale highway.

One of the passengers, a female Spanish national, was shot on the right foot.

A driver and a passenger on the second vehicle also sustained injuries.

The two vehicles were ferrying passengers from Lodwar to Kitale when they came under attack on Thursday afternoon.

The incident happened between KWS camp and Kainuk centre.

Police said the injured were taken to at Kainuk health centre.

Drivers of the vehicles said they were in a convoy when they were stopped by three gunmen.

They refused to stop prompting the gunmen believed to be bandits roaming the area, to shoot at them.

The gang targeted the front side of one of the vehicles injuring a driver and one passenger. The driver however managed to drive the vehicle to Kainuk health center.

The Spanish national identified as Diana Astropetros, 40, was however referred to Kapenguria County Refferal Hospital while in critical condition.

The driver who suffered a slight gun shot wound on the right thigh was treated and discharged.

The passenger in the second vehicle was also attended to at the local hospital.

All the other 11 passengers were accounted for.

Rift Valley police boss Tom Odero said they had sent more personnel to pursue the bandits.

Police believe the gang was on the run and was after water when the incident happened.

The road has had a lull of insecurity after it was tarmacked.

Rough terrain used to make it easier for the gang to attack both public and private vehicles on the 400km stretch.
