A senior police officer was Friday evening shot dead while three of his colleagues were injured in an ambush by gunmen in Mochongoi, Baringo County.

Inspector Wycliffe Nyongesa was killed as he led his juniors for a patrol in the area at about 6 pm.

The three injured officers were taken to hospital.

Police said the bandits took the senior officer’s G3 rifle that had 60 bullets, body armor and other uniforms.

The body was picked from the scene long after the incident.

The ambush happened in Kapkechir Ridge as the team patrolled the area.

The area has remained in trouble for long as authorities battle bandits who are roaming there.

Up to five platoons are deployed in the area to tame the cattle rustling that has left many dead and others wounded.

Rift Valley police boss Tom Odero said a hunt for the gang is ongoing.

A major operation is planned in the area amid concerns that the bandits are being armed.
