Khalid Ahmed, the husband of Sports Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohamed, is dead.

The family said Ahmed died Thursday morning at Karen Hospital in Nairobi after a short illness.

The father of two kept off public life and concentrated on his family and business.

A family spokesman said Amina was grief-stricken because she had yet to fully recover from the loss of her brother, Esmael Mohammed Jibril, in March. The prominent city businessman died while receiving treatment in India.

The burial of Ahmed was planned for Thursday at his Machakos farm.

Top government officials visited Amina's Nairobi home to condole with the family.

President Uhuru Kenyatta led top government officials in sending condolence messages to the family.

Uhuru said Ahmed was a gentleman and a strong pillar of his family.

“I have received the disheartening news of the passing away of Mr Khalid Ahmed with great sadness. Mr Ahmed was a great person, a gentleman and a strong pillar of his family.

“My deepest condolences to my colleague and friend Cabinet Secretary Amina, the children and the extended family as they come to terms with the sudden passing away of Mr Ahmed.

“I pray that God, the Almighty grants you the fortitude and grace to go through this difficult period of mourning your beloved spouse, father and relative,” the President said.

The head of state, who is in the United Kingdom on an official visit, remembered Ahmed as a gifted and successful businessman.

“It is very unfortunate that death has robbed our country of a gifted businessman whose contribution to the progress of our nation shall be dearly missed,” the President said.

Cabinet Secretaries Fred Matiang'i, Najib Balala and ODM leader Raila Odinga posted condolence messages on social media.

Amina's colleagues in the Cabinet were set to visit her on Thursday.

Key figures in the sports fraternity also sent messages of condolences to Amina.

Paul Tergat, a member of the International Olympic Committee, said the loss was “such a huge blow to the super hardworking CS and her family.”

The celebrated athlete said he was lost for words to learn of the passing of Amina's husband.
