Cases of depression on the rise as virus wreaks havoc in homes - ministry task force

Increasing cases of depression are causing suffering in homes, Dr Frank Njenga has said.

Njenga, who was the chairperson of the Task force on Mental Health, made the remark when presenting the recommendations made.

During a press briefing on Tuesday, Njenga said that many people are living with stigma based on what they are going through during this period when the world is fighting Covid-19.

"We need to put in place strategies to manage mental health to deal with the burden which is there," Njenga said.

Health CS Mutahi Kagwe added that since coronavirus disease struck the country, it has caused a lot of anguish and suffering .

"Majority of our people have gone through a lot of problems, including depression," Kagwe said.

Kagwe added that in Kenya, it is estimated that one in every 10 people suffer from mental illness with depression leading. Alcohol is the highest contributor to mental illness.

Kenya on Tuesday recorded 183 new positive cases bringing the number to 8,250.

This is out of 2,061 samples tested in the past 24 hours.

193,455 samples have been tested so far in the country.

 

The total confirmed cases of recoveries in the country is at 90 recoveries bringing number to 2,504.

 

However, the country has lost three people bringing the number to  167 total fatalities.
