Nairobi Governor Sonko has given Sh5 million to Toi Market traders after a fire gutted their stalls on Tuesday morning.

He told the traders the market will be repaired. The traders lost property worth millions of shillings in the inferno.

"I, together with my team, will come back and we will start rebuilding this market. We don't want games with the lives of citizens," Sonko told Kibra residents.

Sonko put landgrabbers on notice. He called for national unity and urged politicians to shun bad politics and focus on services.

Earlier, ODM leader Raila Odinga blamed landgrabbers for the fire, which destroyed parts of Toi market near Kibra.

The inferno started at 4am.

“This is not the first time Toi is being razed. This was well planned," Raila said.

"It is not accidental. I’m sure landgrabbers are behind this so they can come tomorrow with the help of police officers to evict owners. I want to assure you that we will not allow this to happen."

Calling for investigations, Raila said he would engage other leaders to find a lasting solution.
