The Law Society of Kenya has nullified the election of North Rift chairman after two top candidates garnered an equal number of votes.

Chairman Zephania Yego, who has served for two years, wants to retain his post.

But newcomer Lawyer Stanley Kagunza tied with him in his first attempt in the vote that took place at the High Court in Eldoret.

Yego and Kagunza each got 76 votes in the exercise that involved lawyers from Eldoret, Iten, Kapenguria and Kitale.

“There was no winner for the position of chairperson after two candidates tied at 76 votes," said Henry Kenei who chairs the LSK North Rift Electoral Commission.

"Regulations indicate we must have a special general meeting to discuss the way forward."

Kenei said the meeting will take place in the next few days.
