Tongaren MP John Chikati's bid to replace former Kiminini lawmaker Chris Wamalwa as Ford Kenya secretary general has received a boost after the party’s women league unanimously endorsed him.

The endorsement by the women league comes barely a week after the national youth league wing led by its president Chekai Musa also backed Chikati.

Addressing the press at Simba House in Nairobi, the Ford Kenya Women League led by Rose Nato and Eunice Chepchumba said the party needs a secretary general who will champion democracy.

The position became vacant following the appointment of Chris Wamalwa as the Chief Administrative Secretary of Water and Sanitation.

“After serious and proper scrutiny of current Ford Kenya party leaders we as the Women League have unanimously decided to endorse Chikati for the seat,” Nato said.

She said Chikati was fit for the position since he is a charismatic leader with a proven track record in handling management issues, a staunch Christian and a good listener.

“As the second oldest party in the country after Kanu, we want an SG with a proven track record of performance," she said.

"Chikati delivered four out of the six-member of county assembly seats from Tongaren to Ford Kenya in last year’s election and also gave Ford Kenya top seats of governor, senator and women rep highest number of votes from Tongaren."

She dismissed reports that Chikati was new in the party, saying he has been in Ford Kenya for a long time.

Chikati first vied for the Kimilili constituency seat on a Ford Kenya in 2002 but lost to Mukhisa Kituyi.

Chepchumba lauded President William Ruto and Speaker of the National Assembly Moses Wetang’ula for honouring Kenya Kwanza's pre-election pact.

''Through the recent appointment of Health Cabinet Secretary Susan Nakhumicha, CAS Sudi Wandabusi and finally Wamalwa, we feel like we are part and parcel of this government and we know more is to come in terms of employment opportunities, development and revival of our ailing factories in western,'' she said.

She said that as Ford Kenya women they were humbly requesting the President and the Speaker to consider some of them in the upcoming government appointments.

So far no other Ford Kenya member has declared his interest in the seat.
