Shinyalu MP Fred Ikana wants the government to crack down on cartels suspected to have been withholding the subsidised fertiliser.

The legislator spoke on Sunday in Mukango PAG church in Shinyalu, where he attended a service.

The MP said President William Ruto's administration has released enough fertiliser to farmers and those withholding it will soon face the law.

"The government has subsidised fertiliser and released it to mwananchi but I’m very bitter that there is a cartel that is withholding it from reaching the people," he said.

"I want to sound a warning to the cartel and ask the security agencies to intervene and bring to book such people who want to sabotage the government interventions."

In his inauguration speech on September 13, 2022, Ruto directed that 1.4 million bags of fertiliser be availed to farmers at a maximum subsidised price of Sh3,500 per 50kg bag down from Sh6500.

To ensure efficient delivery and effective control mechanisms in place, the fertiliser was to be availed through the National Cereals and Produce Board depots and sub-depots countrywide.

According to the directive, individual farmers are entitled to a maximum of 100, 50kg bags of fertiliser.

However, many farmers are yet to access the commodity and it is suspected that some unscrupulous cartels have a hand in the scarcity.

The legislator also called on residents to unite and work with the Kenya Kwanza government regardless of their political affiliations.

He asked his electorate to exercise a little patience as he organises his service delivery unit.

“Politics is over let’s come together and build Shinyalu. It’s now time to deliver on the promises and pledges I made during my campaigns," Ikana said.

"I was elected on an ANC ticket, but I’m the MP of Shinyalu people and therefore I promise to work with everybody regardless of how they voted."
