Bungoma Governor-elect Kenneth Lusaka has assured parents whose children benefitted from the county government scholarship that they should not worry.

Lusaka asked parents and guardians not to worry as the county government will settle school fees.

He spoke in Kamukuywa in Kimilili constituency on Sunday.

"I am aware that a number of children are at home after they were sent from school because the outgoing administration failed to clear fees. I will make sure fees is paid once I settle in office," Lusaka said.

Lusaka also pleaded with principals to not send learners home as his government will make plans to settle the fees on time.

"Once I'm sworn in, I will come up with a plan to settle the fees so that children who are beneficiaries of the scholarship are not sent home," he said.

Lusaka added, "Principals should be patient because it is a transition period and once I settle in office I will have modalities to settle the fee arrears."

During his campaigns, Lusaka said he would review the scholarship scheme which was famously known as Wangamati scholarship.

"I will review it so that not only bright students benefit from the scheme, but also those who get 150 marks in KCPE exam get the bursary or the scholarship, they are all our children," he said.

During the former governor Wycliffe Wangamati's regime, over 10,000 students benefitted from the scheme since 2018 with the first cohort of 500 students sitting their KCSE exams last year.

Rumours of Lusaka's administration failing to settle scholarship fees have been doing rounds on social media even as Lusaka is yet to be sworn in after a landslide win on August 9 polls.

Lusaka promised to implement all projects he pledged during his campaigns and asked residents to be patient as he works on forming his government.

He added that the tax holiday, good roads, education and water will be a priority of his government.

"I will fulfil all my promises, I want to make Bungoma county a nice place again, I want to make sure businesses thrive again so that people have money in their pockets."

Lusaka won after garnering 244,000 against Wangamati's 137,000 in the just concluded polls.
