Busia Governor Sospeter Ojaamong has said he is still consulting on whether to vie for the Teso South MP seat.

The county chief said on Sunday he will make his declaration soon.

The governor is on record having said he intends to contest for the Teso South MP seat during August polls.

“I'm still making consultations on my plans to vie for the Teso South parliamentary seat in the August 9 elections,” Ojaamong said.

“I'm traversing the constituency to seek views of the electorate before making an informed decision.”

His Sunday’s non-commitment on his bid for the seat was the second. When he met journalists in January in Busia town, the governor declined to commit to whether he was in the race for the Teso South MP seat or not.

Journalists had tasked him to clear speculation over whether he still harbours ambitions for the parliamentary seat currently held by ODM’s Geoffrey Omuse.

He said he would give direction on the issue at a date he did not disclose.

“During my interaction with Teso South residents, I found out that there is a lot that is needed to steer the constituency to greater heights instead of only relying on Constituency Development Fund,” Ojaamong who was meeting members of the Igoria clan at Obekai in Teso South on Sunday said.

He is serving his second and final term as governor, having been elected Busia’s first county chief in 2013. He recaptured the seat in 2017 after a fierce political battle with former Funyula MP Paul Otuoma.

The governor, despite leaving Teso South residents guessing on his next political move has however been busy traversing the constituency, launching development projects, holding meetings with selected families and fundraising for women and youth groups.

The last of such events was held on February 7 when he met members of Upendo Women Group at Kwang’amoru where he urged the group to plant trees to support the national government’s initiative of ensuring at least 10 per cent of Kenya’s land is covered by trees.

The governor has on diverse occasions said he will not retire from politics because of the experience he has garnered in the last 30 years.

In August 2020, Ojaamong, at a fundraiser in Kwang’amoru said Busia residents and Kenyans should not expect him to retire from politics. He said he was too young to leave the political field.

He told residents of Teso South subcounty then that he may vie for a political seat after his term as governor expires.

On August 6, 2019, he said he may vie for the post of MP in 2022, although he did not reveal in which constituency in Busia.

Ojaamong previously served as MP for Amagoro constituency for two terms between 2002 and 2013.

The law does not bar governors who complete their terms from contesting other political positions, such as senator, MP, Woman Representative and MCA.

On January 25, he denied claims that he was planning to ditch the ODM party.

“Let me put the record straight that the Orange Democratic Movement is my party yesterday, today, tomorrow and the future,” he said.

"Raila Odinga is my party leader. In all my political life, ODM has remained my party of choice.”

He has been active on Azimio La Umoja rallies.
