Four thousand farmers in Busia have benefited from European Union funding through Self Help Africa to promote cassava production.

Head of programme Siyengo said the EU has injected Sh650 million in the project that covers six counties that also include Kisumu, Siaya, Homa Bay, Migori and Kilifi.

The team had paid a courtesy call to Busia Governor Sospeter Ojaamong last week.

Siyengo said the three-year programme supports seed mechanisation and value addition.

He added that they have also trained about 60 extension officers and equipped them with programme Apps and tablets.

Ojaamong thanked the EU for the revival of commercial cassava production, which he said will boost the county's economy.

He urged SHA to avail the right variety to boost production. He said apart from promoting cassava production, the EU has injected funds towards afforestation to improve forest cover in the county.

Deputy Governor Moses Mulomi said cassava was a major source of income and with the revival of the crop, the county's economy will improve.
