Police in Naivasha are seeking a gang of three that shot and left for dead a junior prison officer during a robbery.

During the incident in Kinamba centre, the warden was shot on both legs before the three robbed a woman of Sh200,000.

The three had followed the woman from one of the banks in Naivasha town before cornering her as she entered her shop in the centre along Naivasha-Kirima road.

While fleeing, they met the unarmed officer who was off duty and opened fire seriously injuring him on both legs before members of the public came to his rescue.

A witness Paul Kimani said the woman had alighted from a matatu and was opening her shop when the thugs attacked.

He said they suspected that the trio had been tipped about the cash that the woman was carrying during the midday incident.

“One of them whipped out a pistol and robbed the woman before shooting another man on the legs who was passing by,” he said on Monday.

Naivasha OCPD Samuel Waweru said the warder was in stable condition and undergoing treatment.

“No arrests have been made so far but we are following some leads and it’s a matter of time before we catch up with those involved,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Kenya Coast Guards Services and members of the public have recovered the body of a fisherman who drowned in Lake Naivasha two days ago.

The body was retrieved near Kamere landing beach two weeks after another two youths involved in illegal fishing drowned near Kihoto estate.

Since the year began, close to 20 people, mainly illegal fishermen, have drowned in the lake while using makeshift boats to fish.

The police boss confirmed the recovery of the body while expressing his concern over the rising cases of drowning in the lake.

“The body has been recovered and taken to the local mortuary while the investigating officers have opened an inquest file into the incident,” he said.
