Ex-CS John Munyes gets IEBC nod to vie for Turkana governor seat

Munyes is eyeing the top seat on a Jubilee ticket to succeed Governor Josphat Nanok.

Former Petrol and Mining CS John Munyes has been cleared byIEBC to run for the governorship in Turkana.

Munyes is eyeing the top seat on a Jubilee ticket to succeed Governor Josphat Nanok.

He was accompanied by his running mate, Speaker of Turkana County Assembly, Erustus Lokaale.

He said they are committed to be elected to save Turkana from suffering. 

"The journey to save the people of Turkana from corruption, high levels of illiteracy, poverty, hunger and many other problems has started," Munyes said.

He said Turkana County has been faced with poverty, famine and starvation and it's time to end the sufferings. 

"The journey has started, my campaigns will be very peaceful," he said.

If elected, the former Cabinet Secretary pledged to address water shortage and conflicts along the border of Turkana, West Pokot and Baringo counties and the border between Kenya, South Sudan, Ethiopia and Uganda.

The clearance of Munyes comes after the Ethics and Anti- Corruption Commission had written to the IEBC advising that it pays attention to the application of 241 aspirants for various seats before clearing them to contest in the forthcoming General Election.

EACC listed 42 governor aspirants across different counties who allegedly missed to resign as state officers before the February 9 deadline.

The anti-graft agency said some of them remained on government payroll despite physically having left office. 

Lokaale urged Turkana residents to vote for Munyes' administration to address their challenges.

He said if elected, their government will serve everyone equally.

"If the current administration cared about the lives of our people, they would not be struggling. Our campaigns will be very peaceful and we hope to address the needs of our people,” he said.

Lokaale urged their opponents to conduct peaceful campaigns in the county and avoid using public funds to lure voters.

Turkana South MP James Lomenen who is eyeing the senatorial seat on the Jubilee ticket said if Munyes gets elected, they will work closely with the National government to address the insecurity in Turkana County.

Turkana County Returning Officer, Amos Obonyo, warned politicians against using hate speech or utterances that may spur violence.
