Kabarak University on Tuesday signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Media County of Kenya (MCK) which will provide a framework for collaboration and implementation of mutual interests in terms of knowledge and expertise.

The University Vice-Chancellor Henry Kiplagat said the agreement would create space for the university to involve MCK as a stakeholder in the development and review of its academic program in media studies.

Speaking during the signing ceremony at the University’s auditorium, he said the document made provision for MCK to offer grants for Kabarak University media students and trainers to run stories on different themes.

“With these agreements in place, MCK will also consider Kabarak students for practical attachments and internship programs,” said Kiplagat.

The VC who was accompanied by MCK Chief Executive Officer David Omwoyo said the University could collaborate with the media regulator for students and staff mentorship programs, workshops and conferences.

Others present during the ceremony were Kabarak University Dean of Education, Fredrick Ngala, Dean of School of Music and Performing Arts, Mellitus Wanyama, the Head of Department of Mass Communication and staff from MCK.

Kiplagat said the institution which started offering media studies in May 2016 is well equipped to train in the subject complete studios and studio technicians.

Omwoyo underscored the importance of the MOU and reiterated the council's commitment to working with learning institutions to build the capacity of journalism students.

“With agreements like these and through the collaboration with learning institutions, students will get practical skills in the relevant media markets besides the skills acquired in class,” he said.

Omwoyo said the MCK introduced the Internship Placement Program to aid students who were previously struggling to get attachment slots for practicals.

Media Council of Kenya launched the internship program in August 2021 with the first cohort being attached to different media houses last month.
