An aspirant for Narok senatorial seat has dismissed move by Azimio la Umoja leaders in the county, calling for consensus among hopefuls seeking the seat.

Salaton Tompo, who is seeking to vie on an ODM ticket, said democratic process should be left to prevail and allow all contestants to exercise their rights.

Speaking during a campaign in Olpusimoru ward in Narok North constituency, Tompo said all the candidates should be subjected to free and fair nomination process to get best candidate who will face their opponents in August polls.

“I think we should go to the nomination and there is not short cut on that. Whoever wins the primaries, I am ready to support and if I win, the other leaders should back me for the seat,” Tompo said.

He warned the ODM party leadership to avoid joking with the nominations saying it would have consequences in the incoming elections.

“They would rather hold elections in a proper way by practicing free and fair process. If they conduct the exercise in a good manner, we will accept the outcome,” he said.

Tompo is likely to face the current senator Ledama Olekina and Kilgoris MP Gideon Konchellah in the nominations.

Unconfirmed reports say former senate aspirant Andrew ole Sunkuli, who is also Mara Education Trust chairman, is warming up to the seat on a Jubilee ticket.

Two weeks ago, Environment Cabinet Secretary Keriako Tobiko and Narok North MP Moitalel ole Kenta while attending Konchellah’s homecoming ceremony, said they will push for consensus for the senate seat just like they did in gubernatorial to avoid a fall out.

Tompo said for a long time, the community has suffered poor leadership despite enormous resources found in the area. “This county needs strong and visionary leaders who listen to people. I will work towards improving the lives of all the people and that is why I am seeking this seat.”

He said the devolved system of government has potential to turn the county into an economic hub owing to its enormous resources and urged voters to pick credible leaders.

“Narok is unique because it’s endowed with immense economic opportunities such as the world-famous Maasai Mara game reserve, and if well tapped by the county government, it can change the lives of our people,” he said.

Tompo also asked politicians to desist from making utterances that can cause panic and despondency among Kenyans.

He said leaders should put the interests of the country before their own and should practice mature politics that can be emulated by future generations.
