Homa Bay beat Migori to qualify for the CS Owalo Super Cup final

The winners will get Sh400,000, Sh300,000, Sh200,000 and Sh100,000 for the top four positions respectively.

Homa Bay Combined Football Club qualified for the finals of the Eliud Owalo Super Cup tournament after beating the Migori Combined 2-1 in a thrilling match today at the Raila Odinga Stadium in Homa Bay Town. 

Enos Ochieng and Jacob Onyango put Homa Bay ahead with goals in the 45th and 60th minutes respectively. Migori Combined pulled one back through Ben Stanley in the added time (91st  minute). 

The tournament is sponsored by ICT& Digital Economy CS Eliud Owalo through the Eliud Owalo Foundation. The teams are drawn from the Luo Nyanza counties namely Migori, Homa Bay, Kisumu and Siaya.

Speaking after the match, Owalo said the objective of the tournament is to develop and nurture talent in the region. 

 “The tournament focuses on developing and nurturing the talent in the Nyanza region. We’re starting it from the lowest level with community teams to expose the best players to the Premier League clubs,” Owalo said.

 "The youth featuring in the tournament have a chance to join major football teams that play Kenya Premier League," he added.

 Owalo said they have arrangements with officials of the major teams to scout talented players from the tournament to join their respective clubs.

“We have representatives of robust teams that play in the KPL and scouts here.  Their role is to identify talent to enable our youth to join their teams,” he added.

 On Wednesday, Kisumu Combined will play Siaya Combined at Jomo Kenyatta Stadium in Kisumu and the winner will face off with Homa Bay in the final at the same venue on Thursday.

The winning team in the inter-county final will play Gor Mahia FC at Nyilima Grounds in Asembo, Siaya County on Saturday this week.

 Gor Mahia's operations manager, Jolawi Obondo, said the tournament is a good opportunity for Nyanza youths and football teams to build each other.

"The youth of this region also have the opportunity to showcase their talent in football," he noted.

He said the tournament provides a good opportunity for talent development among the youth. "At Gor Mahia FC, we are keen to get players from such tournaments,” Obondo said.

A technical coordinating committee member Gerald Omollo said the winners will be presented with cash awards and trophies.

 The winners will get Sh400,000, Sh300,000, Sh200,000, and Sh100,000 the top four positions respectively. “The best players and scorers will also be awarded,” Omollo said.
