Education officials in Kisii Central have opened investigations into claims that a head teacher sent some candidates home over lunch money on Tuesday.

The incident at Gesere Primary School in Keumbu, Nyaribari Chache nearly marred the commencement of examination at the school.

This was after a short protest by parents before police ordered them to disperse.

Kisii Central subcounty education director Cyrus Juma confirmed the incident and told the Star that they have already opened a probe into it.

"It is a matter we are looking into as I speak to you," he said.

He said they would want to establish how and why the learners were sent home.

"The primary information we have is that the head teacher did not send the learners home for any levy," he told the Star.

In the same subcounty, some 7 schools failed to pick papers for their Grade 6 exams on Monday.

Juma said most institutions affected are those that were closed in 2019 for failing to meet registration requirements.

The subcounty has 107 KCPE centres and 144 KCSE centres.

Elsewhere, two KCPE candidates are sitting their exams in the hospital.

Both female candidates were taken ill hours after they began their exams on Monday.

In Kitutu Chache South, another KCPE candidate was reported to have given birth while sitting her exams.
