The government will use a helicopter to distribute exam papers to parts of Taita Taveta that have been cut off by floods and those inaccessible by road, county commissioner Lyford Kibaara has said.

“Some areas like Mata in Taveta have been hit hard by flash floods and may pose a challenge is distributing exam materials,” Kibaara said on Saturday.

He further advised people living in areas that are likely to experience floods to move to higher grounds.

Rainfall in the county started a fortnight ago and is expected to continue until the second week of December, according to the Met department.

Kibaara said they are working with Kenya Wildlife Service to distribute the Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA) and Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) exams that will start on Monday.

“We want to deliver a clean examination that is free from any irregularity. Our multiagency team is working closely to ensure a smooth running of the process,” Kibaara said during a meeting in Voi.

In the county, 16,284 candidates will sit the KCPE and KPSEA in 420 exam centres.

Meanwhile, the county's relief response team has finalised the distribution of relief food for candidates in all exam centres.

Food aid is meant to cushion candidates from the biting effects of hunger in the region.

Team chairman Ali Itambo said the food donation will play a part in helping candidates perform well in their exams.
