Residents of Kinoru, Tseikuru ward in Mwingi North have called on Kitui Governor Julius Malombe to intervene and save them from walking for hours in search of water.

The residents said they walk over 10 kilometres to fetch water, which is tiresome and time-consuming.

Resident Kalimi Mwendwa said school-going children have had a challenge as they are required to go to school with water.

“Our children can hardly walk for 10 kilometres to fetch water yet it is a requirement,” she said.

Kalimi said due to the prolonged drought, most of them have skipped school for lack of water.

“We urge the governor to rescue our children for them to learn comfortably,” she said.

Resident Mwikali Musya said residents have proposed areas where earth dams can be sunk including places close to schools, which will benefit everyone.

Mwikali said she leaves her children asleep to trek for hours before she can come back and prepare them for school, including carrying some water to their institutions.

She said they waste a lot of time fetching water from the nearby river that is 10 kilometres away and sometimes it dries up.

In line with his manifesto to ensure residents have water, the residents want the governor to consider sinking water sources for them.
