The Garissa government is set to hire more ECDE teachers and build classrooms to strengthen early education.

County secretary Abdi Ali said a strong foundation is important for the young ones.

Abdi spoke on Wednesday when he opened a public financial management seminar in Garissa.

He said they want to have a new beginning since ECDE has been included in the new curriculum.

“That is why we want to employ the teachers on a permanent basis to boost their morale,” Abdi said.

The county secretary said teachers play an important role in the growth of the children by nurturing and molding them for a better future.

Abdi also said youth should join tertiary institutions as the county faces a shortage of people with such skills.

“As a county, we have pumped in a substantial amount of funds to improve on the infrastructure as well equip these institutions,” he said.

Governor Ali Korane's administration had come under sharp criticism from some quarters for doing little to improve quality of learning at the lower levels.

He is accused of failing to employ teachers as well as putting up more infrastructure.

Abdi however said over the last four years the county has remained consistent in employing ECDE teachers as well as putting up structures in places that lacked.

“The Garissa government remains committed in addressing the plight of teachers, stabilising early learning and setting a strong base for our children,” he said.

Last month, the county signed an MoU with the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development to formulate a curriculum for ECDE.

Abdi said with the new  partnership, pupils can look forward to a bright future since they will have all that they require in their day to day learning.
