Two people were killed in a gun attack at a village in Marsabit on Tuesday evening.

Police say five others were seriously injured after their vehicle was attacked by suspected bandits between Bubisa and Turbi along the Marsabit-Moyale highway.

Armed assailants opened fire at the passengers in a Toyota Probox.

Police arrived at the scene minutes later but no arrest was made.

Marsabit police commander Paul Rotich said multiagency teams have been dispatched to track the assailants who fled after the attack.

The injured were transferred to Sololo Missionary Hospital for treatment.

The region is facing continuous attacks and counter attacks from gunmen over political differences and inter-communal clashes.

Dozens of people have been killed and others displaced.

The attack comes even as President Uhuru Kenyatta issued a two-week ultimatum for Marsabit leaders to come up with a lasting solution to the conflicts.

On February 22, Uhuru cautioned the leaders that failure to bring forward a concrete strategy will push the government to deploy security agencies with strict instructions to forcefully end insecurity in the county.

He said there is need for Marsabit leaders to change their approach and work together to promote unity instead of fuelling conflicts among residents.

“My dear friends from Marsabit, you should sit down together and decide that you want peace amongst yourselves. You must agree and bring me the solution because you have it,” the President said.

He said peace is an important thing that brings a lot of benefits.

"Instead of focusing on war and petty tribal clashes, focus on how you will uplift the lives of the people of Marsabit,” Uhuru said.

He said leaders should not allow political competition to undermine peace and security but should work together towards uniting Kenyans.

Marsabit is classified as a hotspot ahead of the August polls due to inter-clan fighting.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i said they are rolling out plans to tame the trend for the sake of stability and unity.
