Speaking to the Star, Governor Johnson Sakaja said that the Dishi na county project is gaining momentum with more pupils enjoying meals at Sh5 only

"We are excited about the rollout of Phase 2 of Dishi na County that brings the total number of children who will be enjoying healthy meals to 184,000 daily," he said.

The number in Phase Two is an increase from the first phase which started with only 81,208 pupils in 45 selected public primary schools.

Sakaja highlighted that they will soon commence the construction of the remaining seven kitchens to bring the total number of children being fed to 250,000.

"We are already seeing increased enrolment in the schools," he added.

10 central kitchens for the programme have been under construction since June 2023.

However, last month the kitchens were completed and handed over to the county.

The kitchen also provides at least 60,000 plates per day to back up schools that might run a shortage of meals.

They are located in Dagoretti North, Embakasi Central, Embakasi South, Kasarani, Kibra, Makadara, Starehe, Roysambu, Ruaraka, and Westlands sub-counties.

They are stationed in Baba Dogo Primary School, Bidii Primary School, Kwa Njenga Primary, Farasi Lane Primary, Muthangari Primary, Kayole One Primary, Njiru Primary, Toi Primary, Roysambu Primary and Racecourse Primary.

In his first budget for the Financial Year 2023-2024, Sh1.2 billion was allocated towards the feeding program.

Sh 500 million was also allocated to build seven more kitchens and the rest to subsidise the cost of a plate for each child.

In July, Governor Sakaja signed an Intergovernmental Partnership Agreement with the National government on the implementation of a school meal plan in Nairobi.

The Sh1.7 billion agreement sets forth the terms of understanding between the parties in the implementation of the school meals programme in public primary schools in Nairobi.

The signing was between the governor and Education CS Ezekiel Machogu and was witnessed by Treasury CS Njuguna Ndung’u

The agreement took effect as of July 17, for three years.
