Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has said that the newly launched school feeding programme will be as popular as former President Daniel Moi's maziwa ya Nyayo initiative.

Speaking during the launch of the Nairobi County School Feeding Programme at Roysambu Primary School, Sakaja said he has been fully involved in the project and warned against incompetence.

"This is the only project I have sat with contractors and told them not to play around with. One day, the way Kenyans remember maziwa ya Nyayo, they will remember Ruto's food programme," he said.

Sakaja added that the feeding programme will restore dignity to school-going children in Nairobi who go to school on an empty stomach.

"This is not just a building, our children are being given dignity and hope for the future," he added.

"We will be constructing 10 kitchens in 10 weeks."

Sakaja commended President William Ruto for supporting his school feeding programme.

It will cost Sh5 per child for school children in public schools and ECDEs within Nairobi to get free meals in the next financial year 2023-24.

The Sh1.2 billion annual plan is part of  Sakaja’s School Feeding Programme— Dishi na County.
