Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has put his best foot forward to renew the image of the inspectorate officers.

On Wednesday, Sakaja announced that all inspectorate officers will have to undergo refresher training on how to handle people during operations.

In relation to that, he pledged to provide all necessary support the officers require.

“You will have to undergo refresher courses on customer service in order to restore dignity,” Sakaja said.

The Governor also stamped authority and said all officers on duty should be in uniform.

Sakaja explained that without uniforms the officers might not be taken seriously and might also be mistaken for impostors who are out to deceive the public.

He also emphasized that all officers will be designated specific areas to operate which will help to spot the officers sleeping on duty or those who will break the law.

The Governor urged the officers to do their work efficiently as they must co-exist with hawkers.

“For the last year we have had no issue with hawkers so I urge the officers to work diligently but within the law,” Sakaja said.

However, he asked the Kanjo askaris to remain firm and not to allow anyone to sabotage their work.

Sakaja added that his administration will also not allow Kanjo officers to be intimidated and mishandled by hawkers.

The meeting was prompted after the latest incident which occurred last week when a woman by the name of Gloria Ntazoia went viral for taking a Kanjo askari for a 'ride to nowhere' after he allegedly entered her car without consent.

The incident is one of the many dramatic encounters a section of Kenyans have faced at the hands of Kanjos.

The Nairobi City County Inspectorate Act, 2017 outlines the mandate of the Kanjo Askari, including the do's and don'ts.

The functions of an inspectorate officer include carrying out inspections within Nairobi to ensure compliance with set standards in respect of the functions of the county government.

"The officers are supposed to regulate and control traffic on county roads and keep order and prevent obstructions in county public places," reads the act.

Also, the askaris are to provide security services to county government properties as well as perform any other duties that may be prescribed by this Act or any other written law from time to time
