MCA wants second term governors barred from Senate race

According to Waithera Chege , most governors serving their last term have pending integrity issues

Nairobi MCA Waithera Chege has urged the National Assembly to bar governors who have served for two terms from running for Senate seats.

Chege, who is also the deputy Majority Whip in the county assembly said some governors who have served for 10 years have pending integrity cases in the Senate.

“I have seen billboards of several outgoing governors with pending integrity files running for Senate. How will they audit reports covering their tenure," Waithera said.

She argued that the governors could bully their way into Senate and chair influential committees to protect their interests.

“Some are even likely to be elected chairs of Public Accounts Committee and Public Investments committee and these are the same committees that interrogates audit reports on counties,” she said.

The MCA said the National Assembly should move with speed and propose a law barring governors finishing their term limit from contesting for senate seats.

Parliament should propose a law barring such leaders from vying for the senate seat less than five years after their terms end,” Waithera added.

At least 20 governors are on their second and final term, they include Wycliffe Oparanya (Kakamega), Hassan Joho (Mombasa), Amason Kingi (Kilifi), Alfred Mutua (Machakos), James Ongwae (Kisii), Mwangi wa Iria (Murang'a) and Jackson Mandago(Uasin Gishu).

Others are Samuel Tunai (Narok), Paul Chepkwony (Kericho), Patrick Khaemba (Trans Nzoia), Okoth Obado (Migori), Martin Wambora (Embu), Salim Mvurya (Kwale), Josphat Nanok (Turkana), Cyprian Awiti (Homa Bay), Sospeter Ojaamong (Busia), Ali Roba (Mandera), Kivutha Kibwana (Makueni), Alex Tanui Tolgos (Elgeyo Marakwet) and Moses Lenolkul Kasaine(Samburu).

Outgoing governors who have declared that they will be vying for senate seats include Kivutha Kibwana , Cornel Rasanga, Samuel Tunai, Jackson Mandago and Ali Roba.
