The desire to usher in new leadership in Nairobi ahead of the August 9 polls has attracted celebrities from the entertainment industry.

Popular and influential names in the entertainment industry have publicly declared interest for elective positions, with some revealing their preferred parties.

Nairobi has 17 subcounties with 85 wards.

In the last elections two celebrities — Dagoretti South MP John Kiarie alias KJ and Starehe MP Charles 'Jaguar' Njagua — joined politics and won their parliamentary bids.

Kiarie became famous from the comedy show Redykyulass, a popular political satire in the early 2000. Njagua is a celebrated musician with songs of different genres.

This year, a number of big names in the sector are seeking to follow their footsteps.

Media personality Davidson Ngibuini, popularly known as DNG has declared interest in the Woodley, Kenyatta Golf Course Ward.

He is seeking to vie under Deputy President William Ruto's UDA party.

Early this year, DNG started his campaigns, saying he had been called to serve the people.

“The time for good governance and servant leadership is now. We cannot allow our ward resources, budgets, land, facilities and opportunities to be misappropriated anymore. Empower me to be your defender," DNG said.

Incumbent MCA Mwangi Njihia, a Jubilee Party member, is seeking to defend his seat under the Azimio La Umoja Movement.

Popular radio presenter and reggae emcee Mary Njambi Koikai has her eyes on the Dagoretti South parliamentary seat.

Njambi, popularly known as Fyah Mummah, is vying as an independent candidate and launched her official campaigns on March 13 this year.

She strongly believes she is the change people need and represents the unheard voices in society.

“I put myself out there to vie for the Dagoretti South MP because I believe I am the change I want to see," Njambi said.

"The future is now and I believe what I stand for resonates with the people."

She seeks to unseat Kiarie.
