Man injured in botched KPLC transformer vandalism dies in hospital

The man who was injured in Athi River South, Machakos County as he attempted to vandalise a transformer belonging to Kenya Power and Lighting Company has died in Hospital.

Raphael Mwanzia, 32, died early Thursday morning while undergoing treatment at Kenyatta National Hospital where he had been referred for special medical attention.

The deceased had initially been admitted at Machakos Level Five hospital where he was rushed following the June 18, 2023, incident.

Mwanzia’s death was reported at the Athi River police station as an electrocution incident on Thursday.

“Further to earlier signal dated 18/06/2023 about Raphael Mwanzia, a Kamba male aged 32 years who was electrocuted while attempting to vandalise KPLC transformer and subsequently admitted at Machakos Level Five hospital for treatment from where he was referred to Kenyatta National Hospital where he was also admitted for treatment under police guard kindly be informed that the suspect passed on today 22/06/2023 at 0300 hours,” a police report seen by the Star read in part.

Police said the body was moved to the hospital’s mortuary for preservation pending a postmortem.
