Marsabit women urged to get involved in peace building

Governor's wife says the peace process is a collective effort and not a one stop activity

Women in Marsabit have been urged to actively take part in peace building and conflict resolution.

Alamitu Jattani, wife of Marsabit governor said since women are the majority, they should take advantage of their numbers to play a key role in fostering peace.

Jattani spoke on Wednesday during the International Women's Day celebration in the county.

"Women bear the burden of conflict, they are also essentials to leading and driving change in peace building and conflict resolution," she said.

She said there is need to promote an atmosphere of cordiality, tolerance and peace so that government can successfully implement various development projects.

Jattani while commending elders for spearheading peace building, said the peace process is a collective effort and not a one stop activity.

She also said women need to be empowered for them to claim their rights. 

"If we are to be involved in peace building, we must be completely non-aligned, there has to be honesty and persistence in solving conflicts," Jattani said.

She said peaceful coexistence, building resilience and encouraging unity is vital in all communities. 

"Sustainable and effective peace building requires a coordinated, integrated and multilateral response." 

Jattani also donated food stuffs to Marsabit GK prison.

She said the inmates should use the opportunity to reform.
