Outgoing Kilifi Governor Amason Kingi has bid farewell to more than 4000 members of staff as he completes his term in office.

Addressing the staff at the governor's office garden on Monday, Kingi thanked everyone for according him support as the pioneer governor of Kilifi.

“We came here when there were no structures and we had to start from scratch," he said.

"For the first six months, I operated from a rundown campaign secretariat at the far corner of the green estate but because of dedication, we are where we are today. This was made possible by all of us."

Kingi was elected governor in 2013 and re-elected in 2017. This was his second last address to the public as a governor.

On Thursday, Kingi is expected to address the public during the swearing-in of governor-elect Gideon Mung'aro.

He said before he exits the office, he will write a letter to all staff and casuals.

Kingi urged the staff from all cadres to accord the new leadership the same cooperation they accorded him.

“The journey has not been easy, there were times that I felt like firing people but I believe in second chances," he said.

"Today I can tell you I never wrote any warning letter to any staff for the last ten years. Those I gave second chances bounced back and did wonders."

He thanked deputy governor Gideon Saburi for standing with him despite taking different political routes towards the end of the term.

Whereas Saburi stuck with the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya coalition, Kingi shifted to Kenya Kwanza.

“Despite our different political affiliations, whenever we met on matters relating to the county our differences would be forgotten. You served diligently and that is what mature leadership is,” Kingi said.

Saburi urged Kingi to never forget county staff whenever opportunities emerge at the national level.

“I know you have been promised a nice position where you are going. Remember I was your deputy and can still serve there. You are leaving staff with vast experience," he said.

"When you get a chance do not forget us. I was also promised something where I am. If all goes well and we take government then I will not forget you."

Kingi is set to be nominated as the senate speaker by the William Ruto-led Kenya Kwanza coalition.

“I will be insane to get a chance and give it to someone else without considering the people I have worked with. This will insinuate that I don’t believe in you,” Kingi said.

Last Friday, Kingi and Mung’aro met the staff to discuss the handing-over process.

“I know some will leave with me while others will remain. The directors should make sure they handle the transition with expertise. Those leaving will leave with their shoulders held high,” he said

He said the staff should be ready and willing to give directions to the new team that will take over.
