Ganze Girls’ High School students were on Sunday sent home for a one-week break.

This is after they refused to go into their dormitories following the death of a colleague by suicide on Friday morning.

On Saturday evening, the school administration learnt of a plan by the girls to leave the school at night and police officers had to be called to thwart it.

The school was closed after a crisis meeting involving the administration, the board of management, the area MP and the Ganze subcounty education officer.

Ganze MP Teddy Mwambire said the students were psychologically tortured and the break would give them time to heal.

“After the crisis meeting, we resolved to allow the students to take a one-week break. What happened will remain in their minds but at least the break will do them some good,” Mwambire said.

On Friday morning, the students discovered a Form 4 student hanging on a clothesline crossbar.

The girl hanged herself using a bedsheet.

The body was moved to Kilifi County Hospital Mortuary awaiting postmortem.

Friends at the school described the girl as a quiet student who kept to herself most of the time.

She did not show any signs of mental disturbance at home or at school.

She was due to sit for her national examination early next year.
