Police are investigating a case in which two children were burnt to death when their five-room rented house caught fire at RedRock village in Kinale ward, Lari constituency, on Monday.

It was reported that Peter Kungu, 4, and his one-and-half-year-old sister Alice Mukami were left alone inside the house by their father.

Lari subcounty police commander Adamson Furaha confirmed that the children's father left them watching television.

Furaha said that their mother is a trader at Kawangware market and she operates at night.

"Their mother comes in the morning. On Monday, the children's father did not wait for his wife to arrive," the police commander said.

"He woke the children up, and left them seated at the sitting room watching television and asked them to wait for their mother."

However, neighbours noticed smoke billowing from their house which is built with iron sheets and timber.

Samuel Ndore, a resident, said people started screaming and calling each other to come and help in putting out the fire.

"The residents did not know that there were children inside until their parents said so," he said.

Furaha, however, said it was too late to rescue the children since they were burnt beyond recognition.

Kinale MCA-elect Dominic Mbugua has sent a message of condolence to the family, urging parents to take care of their children.

Mbugua also urged the society to support the family at this moment they are suffering the loss.

Another resident, Peter Kimani, asked Kiambu county to allocate a fighting engine for Lari to help in any future fire disasters.

The police commander said they handed over the investigations, which is being led by DCI officers attached to Lari subcounty, to establish what really caused the inferno.

Furaha said that the bodies of the two children were taken to Naivasha subcounty hospital mortuary, where autopsies will be conducted as the probes goes on.
