Thika Town MP Patrick Wainaina wants the law amended to make theft of public resources a capital offence.

The MP argues this will deter civil servants and leaders from engaging in fraudulent deals and make them responsible for the resources entrusted to them.

Wainaina said unscrupulous individuals who have been sweeping clean public coffers to enrich themselves are the reason development is slow.

He spoke on Tuesday while inspecting the newly built chief’s offices in Ngoliba, Thika East, constructed by the NGCDF at Sh1 million.

“Punitive measures must be taken to curb theft of public resources. We should go the China way where corrupt individuals are publicly assassinated. Leaders must be responsible and they must safeguard public resources instead of looting to enrich themselves,” Wainaina said.

The MP likened looting from public coffers to killing Kenyans.

“Stealing from hospitals is like killing sick Kenyans. Stealing funds meant to improve education standards in the country, rehabilitate or construct schools is destroying the future of Kenyan children. This must be stopped,” he said.

Wainaina was irked by the fact that despite hefty allocations to the Thika Constituency Development Fund in the past regimes, no chief’s office was constructed in Ngoliba. The old one was constructed in the 1970s.

The MP called on Kenyans to rally behind initiatives to end graft and support President Uhuru Kenyatta’s declared war to slay the corruption dragon.

Wainaina recently told the President to go for the ‘big fish’ and jail at least two who have been implicated in graft scandals to tame others who have an insatiable appetite for public resources.

“The war will be won if these people are put behind bars for not less than 10 years,” the lawmaker said.

Meanwhile, he called on politicians to desist from engaging in heightened political activities to the detriment of development and deliver on their campaign promises to transform the country.

“Kenyans are tired of politics every day. They want to see projects geared at improving their livelihoods and transforming the nation implemented,” he said.
