Shujaa lose to South Africa in Hong Kong Sevens Series

Kenya Sevens rugby team, Shujaa, suffered their third consecutive defeat in Hong Kong after losing 26-17 to African rivals South Africa in the pool D match on April 1.

Shujaa began their campaign with a 29-5 loss to New Zealand before also firing blanks against Ireland after going down 26-14 in the eighth round of the 2022/23 World Rugby Sevens Series.

The blitzboks took a 19-0 lead at the interval after scoring three quick-fire tries through captain Siviwe Soyizwapi, Shaun Williams who earned his first call-up in 2021 and Christie Grobbellaar. The 25-year-old utility back Ricardo Duarttee, slotted home the two conversions as the four-time champions starved Kenya of possession.

Tony Omondi's pin-point pass released skipper Nelson Oyoo who scored to make it 19-5 as shujaa saw more possession at the start of the second half.

Damian McGrath's however, charges lost possession from an attacking position. The Sandile Ngcobo-coached side capitalised on the error with Donovan Don and Williams scoring and converting respectively for a 26-5 score. 

Jeff Oluoch sprinted 50 meters to score Shujaa's second try. Billy Odhiambo also scored at the death with Johnston Olindi converting as the full-time whistle sounded.
