Kenya Sevens head coach Damian McGrath has hinted at ringing changes in his squad following a below par performance at the Cape Town Sevens over the weekend.

Shujaa picked a paltry three points after winning two and losing four matches as their poor start to the season continued in South Africa.

Team Kenya are placed 14th on the standings with nine points and face a fight to retain their core status for next season with seven tournaments left.

The 15th-ranked core team, based on accumulated series points following the tenth round in Toulouse in May 2023, will be relegated.

The teams ranked 12, 13 and 14th at the end of the Toulouse leg will enter a four-team relegation playoff with the Challenger 2023 Sevens winner at the 11th and and final round of the Sevens Series in London in June 2023.

The Englishman said they have several areas they want to keep improving.

"We dropped the balls a couple of times when playing Argentina, New Zealand and Spain. We simply can't give the ball away cheaply. We also need to execute better in attack," said McGrath.

He said they have a big training squad and thus tough competition for places, especially for players who did not deliver in Cape Town.

"It's going to be tough picking the 12 players to make the team. We will be looking at various combinations and players who put their hands up in training will get selected,” he added.

In Cape Town, Kenya lost their opening match 19-5 to Argentina, lost 31-5 to New Zealand and drawing 5-5 with Spain to drop to the classification matches.
