After sealing qualification for the FKF Premier League, Mara Sugar head coach Benedict Wanjala is now targeting the National Super League (NSL) title.

“We are not celebrating yet. We have three more games. Our target is to win the games and lift the NSL trophy. Those games are like finals to us,” said Wanjala.

Mara Sugar will next weekend visit Kibera Black Stars. The other games will be against second-placed Mathare United and fourth-placed Nairobi United.

“I want to thank God, my technical bench, the players and the management of Mara Sugar Company for the support throughout the season. It has been a very challenging period,” added the tactician.

The tactician attributed the team’s qualification to the top-tier league to teamwork, unity, dedication, hard work, and discipline.

“When I took charge in January, I sat down with the players and set our targets. We have had a superb campaign and I’m happy with the team,” he said.

Wanjala joined Mara Sugar in January after the unceremonious departure of Vincent Nyaberi who dumped the cane millers for Mully Children’s Family (MCF).

Nyaberi, who led Murang’a Seal to the FKF Premier League, was in charge of the team for only three games after taking over from Francis Xavier.

Technical director, Boniface Ambani dedicated the qualification to the team manager Thomas Odhiambo who died a month ago. He was found dead in his house.

“I joined this team in 2011 and set up structures together with Mboya. Sadly, he died before witnessing our dream of KPL qualification come through,” said Ambani.

“It has been a long, painful journey but I’m happy we are finally there,” added the former international.

Kevin Otieno, a Mara Sugar fan said: “We are ready for the Premier League. Our main target next season is to maintain our top-tier league status. We are also happy we shall watch KPL matches here at Awendo.”

Separately, relegated Silibwet’s captain Jimmy Owili said the team would bounce back. He, however, challenged the club’s management and fans to stand with the team.

“It has been a tough season with financial and management challenges. This contributed to our eventual relegation,” said Owili.

He challenged the management board to plan early for next season. “For us to bounce back, our management must organize a proper pre-season, strengthen the playing unit and technical bench ahead of the new season,” he said.
